100 Years ago – 1926.

Apple growers of the 13-county area were on a visit March 4-15 in Florida, where they met with apple growers. The trip was sponsored by the Shenandoah Valley Inc. The “Apple Blossom Special” train left Harrisonburg on March 5. Almost 200 were on the trip, including the Stonewall Brigade Band, who played “We’re So Glad to Meet You” in Florida. The band was organized in 1854 as the Mountain Sax-Horn band, which kept that name until the Civil War, when its members were mustered in as the Fifth Virginia Regiment Band.

75 years ago – 1951

A 1947 Chevrolet sedan was stolen from the parking lot of the M.&N. Motor Company in Villa Heights. The office had been entered, but nothing was missing. It was thought the office was broken into in a search for the keys, but they had not been stored in the office. It was speculated that the car had been hot-wired.

50 years ago – 1976

The six candidates running for the three open seats on the Martinsville City Council were Harry L. Boaz, William D. Hobson, John McCraw, L.D. Oakes, J.P. “Pat” Sutton and Francis T. West.

25 years ago - 2001

Devon Robinson, 7, of Figsboro was named Little Miss Martinsville-Henry County; Amanda Herndon, 9, of Axton was named Young Miss MHC; and Indya Penn of Martinsville and Lauren Martin, 10, of Bassett were named Miss Hospitality of their age groups.
