100 Years ago – 1926
A survey by the Norfolk and Western’s agricultural department showed that Patrick County was sixth among the 16 leading apple-growing counties. The survey estimated that there were about 4.5 million apple trees in commercial apples in Virginia. The most popular apple was Winesap, followed by the York Imperial and then Stayman Winesap. The survey covered 3,300 orchard which had between 100 and 72,000 trees. Patrick County reported having 282,658 apple trees.
75 years ago – 1951
Twenty-two of the 50 women asked if they would serve on Henry County circuit court juries had responded, but their answers would not be made public until the next meeting of the Jury commission. This was the first time women in Henry County had been asked to serve on a jury and, by state law, they could accept or decline.
50 years ago – 1976
The Martinsville Bulldogs defeated Dan River’s Wildcats, 72-56, at Laurel Park High School, making them the Region III, Group AA basketball champions.
25 years ago - 2001
The MS Walk committee members were Kristi Banks, Tammy Darnell, Judy Cloud, Lou Anne Black, Karen Parker, Mindy Harris and Sandee Barth. They were planning the MS Walk which was scheduled for April 21.
The Fast Track 2001 Trade Show began, held at Martin Plaza in uptown Martinsville. It had displays by 132 area businesses, 10 more than the year before, but 18 shy of the high of about 150 several years back when it was held at Patrick Henry Mall. An estimated 7,000 people attended, about 2,000 more than the year before. Steve Shepherd was the president of the Chamber, and Kim Adkins was the executive vice president.
