100 Years ago – 1926

 John Hairston died at work at the Valley Veneer plant near Bassett, by falling into a vat of scalding water.

75 years ago – 1951

Patrick Henry Air Squadron delivered several thousand booklets on “Survival Under Atomic Attack,” with one going to every home inside the Martinsville City limits. The booklets were prepared by the U.S. government and published as part of the Civilian Defense program.

50 years ago – 1976

Safari Club, the “Home of the Good Time,” featured disco music ever Friday and Saturday, with live entertainment on Saturdays. This Saturday it was the Soul Vibrations band of Greensboro. The nightclub was on Route 648, Axton.

25 years ago - 2001

Pulaski Furniture Corp. was identified as the first tenant to come into the Commonwealth Centre (now also called the Clocktower), the former Tultex Corp. building on Franklin Street. George Lester had bought the $1-million-plus-square-foot building through the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in December for $750,000.
