100 Years ago – 1925
Owners of the house at 617 Cleveland Ave., Martinsville, advertised that they would rent a room and provide board to two men.
75 years ago – 1950
The annual Axton Community Fair ran for the final of two nights at Axton high school. It was sponsored by the Axton Ruritan club, the Axton FFA, the Axton Veterans Training Class and the Axton community. Cash prizes were offered for the best displays of the farm. Exhibits that were judged included grains and vegetables, canned goods, cut and potted flowers, pickles, needlecraft, pies and pastries and tobacco. Food served included Brunswick stew, fried chicken, ham, cakes and cold drinks. Ralph A. Tavaner was the fair manager.
50 years ago – 1975
Workers of Fieldcrest Mills Inc. would work seven-day work weeks every other week, to handle increases in orders. The normal full production levels required three six-day work weeks a month, but the new schedule would have about 600 of the plant’s 1,450 employees working in three shifts every other Sunday in the yarn preparation, slashing, weaving and cutting and sewing departments.
25 years ago - 2000
Six of 20 people who passed an EMT course were teenagers: Melissa Hatcher, 16; Jonathan Joyce, 16, of Martinsville; Jenna Strom, 17, of Fieldale; Marilyn Novell, 17, of Collinsville; Will Joyce, 16, of Martinsville; and Evan Holiday, 16, of Axton.
