100 Years ago – 1925
General Prohibition Officer James M. Riddle and H.G. Stultz captured two teams and two large wagons with liquor near Oak Level.
75 years ago – 1950
Mr. and Mrs. Abe Globman, founders of Globman’s Department Store Inc., bought the homesite of Dr. and Mrs. John A. Shackelford at 132 Church St. for $50,000. The 12-room, two-story Colonial house was located diagonally across Church Street from the new Globman’s store being built between Church and Main streets.. The property was 70 feet along Church Street, going back to a depth of 234 feet. It was built around 1935 as the home of the Shackelfords, but they had moved to a farm ranch home near Spencer. Abe Globman said he did not have any plans at the moment for the property except perhaps to use the back end of the lot for parking.
1961
Forty people from the local area went to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts by bus on occasion of that museum’s 25th anniversary. It was the first state-supported museum in the nation. In 1960, the VMFA got its first four affiliate members, arts centers in Williamsburg, Norfolk, Charlottesville and Roanoke. Some arts supporters in Martinsville were talking about forming a Martinsville group to get affiliation. In 1978, Piedmont Arts became an affiliate of the VMFA.
A 38-year-old Fieldale man was in jail on charges of assault and being drunk. Costa Lee Eggleston, 802 A St., and Thurman George Gravely, 209 Massey St., both black teenagers, were part of a group of other young black people at The Square. They said that Paul Martin, who was part of a small group of white people, hit him during a melee that began on The Square and continued along Jones Street and west on Fayette St.
50 years ago – 1975
Pam Archer, the interior decorator with Martinsville Office Supply Co., was hired by the County of Henry to help plan the interior of the new Henry County Administration Building, working under the architect.
Fieldcrest Mills’ Towel Mill in Fieldale was working full production, three shifts a day five days of the week. The company’s blanket and sheeting mill in Een were shut down for the week. One thousand people worked at the plants in Eden, and 1,500 worked in Fieldale. Unemployment in the region was 8.3%.
25 years ago - 2000
Julia Brown, a senior at Martinsville High School and daughter of Debora S. Brown and Thomas H. Brown, was selected as the top first soprano in District VI of All-District Chorus.
