100 Years ago – 1925
J.W.F. Beckner leased the Piedmont Kennel Farm from P.S. Ford. He announced plans to convert it into a model farm, including with a dairy to supply milk for hotels, and poultry. Ford would retain a small portion of the farm for his dogs.
The Globe Theatre got new management, J.A. Crews, along with upgrades including refitted seats.
75 years ago – 1950
The Blue Ridge Baptist Pastors’ Association, which covered a territory of seven counties, made the official statement that they highly favored Martinsville as a location for the a new Baptist seminary.
1961
The Henry County Board of Supervisors approved an increase of $3,659 for the County Welfare Department, bringing that department’s total budget to $155,701. The department got most of its funding from the federal government, some from the state and a new total of $28,755 from the county,
50 years ago – 1975
The Henry County Board of Supervisors put the supervision of the two county dog catchers under the supervision of County Administrator John E. Longmire instead of Sheriff C.P. Witt. Witt had said there were a lot of complaints about the dog catchers, most being that they didn’t show up when requested and when they did, the dog was gone.
25 years ago - 2000
Walter “Rocky” Reynolds, a Martinsville High School graduate and 1978 graduate of Virginia State University, was playing to role of Edward in a production of “Whistle Don the Wind” in London.
