100 Years ago – 1925
Prohibition officers had a bad surprise after they got done busing a still near Pleasant Grove Church in Franklin County: vandals had cut all the casing on the car and threw a rock through the windshield. They had to buy a new set of tires before they could go back to town.
75 years ago – 1950
Leon Globman, vice-president and general manager of Globman’s Department store at Church and Main streets, reported overnight thefts totaling around $800 in cash. It was the store’s second recent burglary; $1,500 had been lost on Aug. 6.The thieves had pried open 42 drawers in eight cash registers on the main and top floors, taking $10 in change from each. Mr. Globman said from then on, no money would be left in the cash registers at night, and the drawers would be left open.
50 years ago – 1975
Two centers for depositing aluminum cans for recycling were set up by the Reynolds Metals Co. of Richmond, on at the Martinsville Shopping Center (A&P) and the other at Patrick Henry Mall. They paid 15 cents per pound.
25 years ago - 2000
Sara Lee Activewear signs an “agreement of interest” to buy Tultex Corp.’s Customer Service Center and was expected to sign a contract for the sale of its complex at Franklin Street and Commonwealth Boulevard. The Customer Service Center was in the Patriot Centre Industrial Park.
