100 Years ago – 1925
Throughout the week, the Tobacco Growers Cooperative Association held community meetings in Greystone, Mt. Pleasant, Dyers Store, Sandy River, Hopper, Leatherwood Store and Figsboro, all communities in Henry County.
75 years ago – 1950
Fire Chief J.E. Minter, Police Chief H.W. Stultz, City Sergeant James L. Carter, City Clerk Jesse D. Clift, Bill Harnsberger and Andrew Schilbe, all of Martinsville, left on a trip to Moback Bay in Matthews county for fishing.
Boy Scout Troop 76 of Horsepasture received a renewal charter, and the Explorer unit received a new charter.
50 years ago – 1975
The Virginia Association of Rescue Squads cleared the Martinsville-Henry County Rescue Squad of alleged “thrill-seeking,” an accusation made by Dr. C.D. Hardison in June 1974, who at the time was the acting director of the emergency room at Memorial Hospital. He had written a letter to the county’s three rescue squads accusing them of irresponsible driving and being recipients of constant complaints from citizens.
25 years ago - 2000
The area population had gone down over the past decade, preliminary estimates from the Census Bureau showed: a 7.2% loss for Martinsville and 2.3% for Henry County. For Martinsville, the decrease followed a three-decade trend. Martinsville’s top population was 19,653 in 1970, and down to 14,996 in July 1999. Henry County’s population was 50,901 in 1970, 56,942 in 1990 and 55,634 in 1999.
