100 Years ago – 1925
Ad for Dossie Hoyle’s Beauty Parlor, Piedmont Creamery Bldg., Opposite Post Office: “Just Reflect on the vast difference we can make in your personal appearance, how we can add to your facial charms, improve your hair and rejuvenate your complexion and you will realize that it is greatly to your advantage to regularly patronize our beauty parlors, where such important improvements are so easily attained.”
In a front-page article about the football game between the Reidsville and Martinsville high school teams: “There was a clash between players of the Tar Heel State and the Fans of Martinville. The boys all returned to Martinsville intact, and it is possible the affair was not so bad after all. Well if anyone thinks the local boys will not defend themselves when given a raw deal, just try them. Our boys are clean in their playing and are slow to wrath, but when they do explode, say kiddo you had better go to the hills. We do not advocate fighting, but a fellow just can’t take everything.” Another article on the same page describe the game as “a thrilling contest” between “evenly matched” teams, though neither scored any points.
75 years ago – 1950
The Community Chest campaign, which had been going on a little over a week, closed, with $13,879 raised, but more money was expected to be added to that after the final report was calculated. The goal had been $16,835. The campaign directors were Harry Gravely and William A. Wright. The end count would end up being $18,319, well above the goal amount.
50 years ago – 1975
A NuTone smoke alarm, normally $39.95, was on sale for $39.95 at Graves Supply at 905 N. Memorial Blvd. It was powered by electricity so had a cord to plug into an outlet.
25 years ago - 2000
Lisa Barker was the new executive director of Martinsville Uptown Revitalization Association, which had the mission of attracting visitors to the area and recruiting new merchants.
