100 Years ago – 1925

The Henry County Fair featured West’s World’s Wonder Show, which had more than 300 people, traveled on its own train of more than 20 double-length railroad cars, had a solid pullman train and a modern dining car, and carried its own horses, tractors, trucks and etc. The Wonder Show had 25 attractions, a concert band, 62 circus wagons, more than 60 tents and 7 “Magnificent Riding Devices.” Trapeze artists Vortex & Keeler, both women, performed at the Henry County Fair.

Prize-winners at the fair included: Dr. G.L. Houchins, first place, horseback rider: $5; Miss Katherine Browm, first grand prize, Decorated Cars: $30; Miss Mary Steagall, First Prize for selling largest amount in Season Tickets: $10.

75 years ago – 1950

Martinsville Granite & Marble at 1110 South Bridge St., Phone 4107, offered Georgia marble headstones. Its ad read, “Immortal Memory. Memory is a fragile thing. Unless it is carefully tended and kept vivid it will gradually fade with the years. A truly effective memorial is a bulwark against the fading effects of time …”

50 years ago – 1975

Martinsville police seized its largest raid of marijuana ever – 15 pounds – from an apartment on Dillard Street.

25 years ago - 2000

Dawn Mills, an Arkansas native and the wife of Wes Mills, took on with Berry-Elliot Realtors as a real estate agent. She and her husband recently had bought their house in Martinsville.
