100 Years ago – 1925
The first meeting of the Patrick Henry Literary Society was held in the auditorium of the grade school, and the Pocahontas Literary Society would meet the following week.
75 years ago – 1950
The Fall and Winter bowling season had just begun, with more teams participating than in the past. The first to play were the Men’s Shift and the Girls’ Shift Leagues, composed of DuPont workers. The Industrial Recreation League would open the following week.
The Boy Scouts Camporee at Camp Lee Ford hosted 120 Scouts, 16 Scoutmasters and their assistants and nine Patrick Henry District officers participated. Troop 76 of Horsepasture, under Scoutmaster Reuben Reynolds.
50 years ago – 1975
To celebrate its grand opening, the Jean Machine store in the Collinsville Center sold each item at $9.99 and less. Meanwhile, Kmart had a sale on Hershey’s bars for 9 cents. The normal price was 13 cents. A box of 10 trash bags cost 49 cents; a 2-pack of Eveready C or D batteries costs 19 cents (normally 56 cents); and three pairs of pantyhose cost 49 cents.
25 years ago - 2000
Commonwealth’s attorney Joan Ziglar said that it could take a year or two before anyone is arrested in the shooting death of Lisa Thomas. Other local murders had taken about that long, she explained. Lisa Thomas had been shot to death in her husband’s store on Walnut Street.
