100 Years ago – 1925
Two young squirrels were placed in the trees on the grounds of the Henry County courthouse. They spent their days running and racing over the branches of the trees. They ate chestnuts and other foods left for them on a porchlike device erected near the ground. A box-like home was erected in the top of one of the trees where it was hoped they would spend the winter. The squirrels were given by Guy Barker, a young Patrick Springs farmer.
Frost hit the Dyer’s Store community for the first time of the year, killing a lot of tobacco and vegetables. It got two houses of John Eggleston’s tobacco, all the tobacco Col. John Hairston had, and a lot of melons, beans and peas. Meanwhile, farmers in the area had fine crops of potatoes, which they were digging up that week.
75 years ago – 1950
Judge Kennon C. Whittle set the new execution dates for the Martinsville Seven as Nov. 17 and 20. At the same time, attorney Martin A. Martin was filing an appeal. The original execution dates were July 15 and 22, 1949.
The senior class at Ridgeway High School presented a program on the United Nations to the October meeting of the PTA. The students led panel discussions.
50 years ago – 1975
Because of a surplus of apples on the market in 1975 and 1974, the price of apples was so low many Patrick County farmers said it would cost more to pay people to pick the apples than they would receive to sell them. The average price was $1.60 per 100 apples when it should have been the $3 per hundred the previous season.
25 years ago - 2000
Martinsville High School senior Trey Deal won the Group AA State Golf Tournament in Abingdon, making him the state golf champion.
