75 years ago – 1950
Eight-five people were enrolled in the adult education classes at Martinsville High School Classes were held Monday and Wednesday evenings for 12 weeks. Ben S. Ramsey was the director of adult education.
50 years ago – 1975
Drummer Johnny Bryant of Martinsville had spent the past year touring with Ray Charles across 47 states and 10 countries in Europe. He described Ray Charles as a perfectionist and a demanding boss.
25 years ago - 2000
The United Way of Henry County and Martinsville voted to continue providing funding for the Patrick Henry District of the Boy Scouts. The matter had been up in the air, after many United Way organizations across the nation stopped funding after a June 28 Supreme Court ruling which allowed Boy Scouts to exclude gay people.
Seven Martinsville High School students were suspended after a fight at the school. It started when one student hit another in the school’s common area around 9:35 a.m., the aftermath of an unresolved argument between the two during summer school. Their friends jumped in. All seven of the boys were charged with disorderly conduct, and six were charged with assault.
