100 Years ago – 1925
Edna McMillan, 17, a member of Oak Level 4-H Club, reported that she had preserved 74 jars of fruits and vegetables. The area was undergoing a severe drought, but Edna had started canning early in the season to be sure to reach the quota of 100 to qualify as a second-year canning club member.
75 years ago – 1950
New technology available at Finney & Payne, 215 E. Main St.: “Now- End Your Garbage Problems This Low-Cost Electric Way! 1950 Hotpoint Disposall. HERE’s HOW IT WORKS: Food refuse dropped into drain opening – then washed away by cold running water – leaving Disposall clean and odorless!”
50 years ago – 1975
Lee Sigmon leased and operated two American Oil Co. gas stations in the city. The gas stations’ parent company was trying to require him to keep them open seven days a week, but he said he would not open on Sundays.
25 years ago – 2000
Scupltor Allen Weidhass of Stuart was commissioned by the board of directors of the J.E.B. Stuart Birthplace Trust to create a bronze life-size statue of Stuart as a child. The generals great-great-grandson, J.E.B. Stuart IV, 10, would serve as the model. The statue would be at Laurel Hill in Ararat, the birthplace of Stuart.
London Police Officer Amit Sarkar spent three days on Martinsville patrol with local Officer Brian K. Davis. The friends had met four years earlier through an ad which Sarkar had placed in a police magazine, looking to trade police insignia patches. Each of the men had a collection of hundreds.
