100 Years ago – 1925
The Martinsville fire company and police force gave a delightful supper at Hotel Henry to City Council members and other guests. Fire department superintendent Mr. J.R. Gregory talked about the organization, duty and faithfulness of both departments. Mr. A.S. Gravely, clerk of the council, gave a similar talk, which was followed by a discussion of the needs and problems of the fire department. The men urged Policeman John Holt, a world war veteran, to tell his story of his experiences as “chicken police,” but he would not talk about it.
75 years ago – 1950
Wilton Peters, 25, of Ferrum, was run over by a train and made off with just a few minor injuries. He was walking along a track when a Norfolk and Western southbound train knocked hi over. He fell into the tracks and the train passed over his body.
50 years ago – 1975
About 20 residents of Lakewood Trail walked along their road in protest, carrying signs on pickets. They were protesting the recent construction of two modular homes in their neighborhood, during a tour National Homes Corp. gave to three busloads of building contractors. The residents claimed that the two houses built by National in May did not meet restrictive covenants.
25 years ago - 2000
Winners of the Sportsman’s Charities Club scholarships were Sheneka Hairston, a graduate of Martinsville High School headed to Virginia Tech; Maria Belcher, a graduate of MHS, headed to Norfolk State University; Soyini-Amma Cross, a graduate of Magna Vista High School and headed to Virginia Commonwealth University; and Keisha Martin, an MHS graduate going to Virginia Tech.
