 100 Years ago – 1925

A tub or wash dress was made of lightweight, simple fabric that could be washed at home in one’s own tub. C.W. Holt Co., Inc., was open from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., and its telephone was 114. It advertised “Tub Frocks, $5.75, for daytime wear – down town and at home. Made of noncrushable linen, plain color broadcloths in assorted high shades, striped broadclothes, and silkettes, at $3.75. Hand-made effects in high colors, Kant Fade fabrics, with dainty collar and cuff of linen, at $5.50. Children’s very fine quality linen Frocks “Handmade in Belgium” in assorted shades. Sizes to 14. Children’s play frocks of ginghams, sizes to 14. $1.10.”

75 years ago – 1950

Finney & Payne sold New Home cabinet model sewing machines for $109.10 and up. The store was at 215 E. Main St.

50 years ago – 1975

Patrick County Deputy Zeb Scales was named acting sheriff until Sheriff Calvin C. Harbour, who had been hospitalized for chest pains, returned. He was discharged from the hospital on April 19, 1975.

25 years ago - 2000

Papa John’s Pizza on Church Street was victim to an armed robbery, when a man brandished a gun demanding money from the cash register. It was the second time in a month for Papa John’s. Martinsville police offered to escort businesses to their banks to make deposits to help keep them safe.
