On the Road to "1776 The Musical"

Join the Martinsville-Henry County Historical Society as we travel to Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest for “1776 The Musical” on Thursday, June 29, 2023, for an evening of theatre under the stars, 7:30-10:00 P.M.!

Revel in the revolutionary spirit of America’s Founding Fathers at Poplar Forest’s presentation of 1776—the Tony Award-winning comedy by Sherman Edwards and Peter Stone based on the events leading up to the drafting and signing of the Declaration of Independence. View these events through the eyes of Ben (Franklin), Richard Henry (Lee), John (Adams) and Tom (Jefferson). Celebrate their contributions to our country’s history.

Bring a lawn chair or a blanket. Please be considerate of those sitting behind and around you. Bug spray is highly encouraged. Outside food and non-alcoholic beverages are permitted. Concessions will be available for purchase including wine, beer, soda, and snacks. You must show ID to purchase alcohol.

You are responsible for securing your own tickets which are $17.76 for adults (ages 18+); $13 for students (ages 6-17 and college); and $4 for children (ages 5 and under). Online ticket sales turn off at 11:30 P.M., June 28, 2023. Tickets will be available through the Museum Shop by calling 434-534-8120 and at the door. You are also responsible for transportation. Carpooling is encouraged; you may use the discussion tab to offer or request rides.

A Historical Society representative plans to arrive at Poplar Forest early to secure a section so that all attendees may sit together. Therefore, an accurate headcount is appreciated by responding accurately to the event invite. Some members may also arrive early to tour Poplar Forest at an additional cost. Again, you may use the discussion tab to communicate your plans.
