100 Years ago – 1925

Henry County Clubs of Boys and Girls, organized by the County Agent, included the soy bean club and the corn club. Members of either clubs could join the Virginia Crop Improvement Association for the fee of $1, enjoying benefits such as field inspections and germination tests. The Henry County Fair Association would offer a premium on certified corn and soy beans.

75 years ago – 1950

Globman’s Bargain Basement sales included the following offers for $1 each: 8 pairs of ladies’ bloomers; ladies sanfordized shrunk broadcloth blouses; plastic and cotton kitchen curtains; ladies’ lace trim rayon slips in sizes 32 to 40; ladies’ rayon jersey gowns; house shoes; 3 pairs of men’s socks.

1961

Hardin Reynolds Memorial High School in Critz and Woolwine High School were warned by the State Board of Education that they may lose accreditation. No reason was given, but Patrick County school officials surmised that it was because those schools did not offer enough subjects. There were five high schools in Patrick County at that time, and the Patrick County Board of Supervisors had just voted to build at $1 million-plus high school at Stuart to replace all of them.

50 years ago – 1975

Henry County Public Service Authority bought a 15-acre tract of land near Ridgeway on which to build a $3 million water filtration system that would serve southern Henry County. The PSA executive director was Robert W. Grant.

25 years ago - 2000

Stanley Knott, a retired postal worker, helped Memorial Hospital purchase nearly $9,000 worth of computer software for its cancer treatment center, in memory of his wife, Joan M. Loser Knott, who died of cancer the year before.

Dr. Elizabeth Vaughan was named the Martinsville Police Department’s Outstanding Citizen of the Year. Her charitable contributions over 16 years included raffling off her car to raise money for the police department in 1995, serving as honorary chairperson of the March of Dimes Walkathon and donating health care to any child on Christmas day.
