100 Years ago – 1925

The Department of Plant Pathology, Extension Division, V.P.I. in Blacksburg told how to prepare the tobacco bed to avoid destruction by the blackfire and wildfire diseases: Soak tobacco seeds in water that had a 1-1,000 strength solution of bichloride of mercury.

1961

Three of Martinsville’s shortest streets were credited with giving among the bigger donations in the Mother’s March: The few houses on Wingfield, Roy and Park streets donated a total of $57.45.

50 years ago – 1975

Ronda Pack, 9, of Vesta, had surgery at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville to remove a brain tumor. A gospel sing in Patrick County raised $1,544 for her expenses, and the Blue Ridge Four Wheelers Club raised more than $900. Total medical expenses were expected to be around $12,000.

25 years ago - 2000

Classes offered at Patrick Henry Community College included “Introduction to the Internet” and “How to Buy a Computer.”
