100 Years ago – 1925

A citywide prayer meeting was held on the lawn east of Anderson Memorial Presbyterian Church, with participation of all the town churches. It was a Wednesday night, and the service began at 8 p.m. The week before, the Methodist Church led the town-wide service.

75 years ago – 1950

“Club Billard Parlor” ran notices in the Special Notices section of the newspaper’s classified ads, on a regular basis. The latest one was: “It’s wise to apologize to a man if you’re wrong – and to a woman if you’re right.” Other ads included Martinsville Printing Co. – “It really was years ago that they made the dollar bill smaller in size. Lately, it just seems to have grown smaller”; A.A. meeting at 8 p.m. Thursday at County Circuit Courtroom; rental cars from Martinsville U-Drive-It Corp.; and Mrs. Nadine C. Guerrant, Dealer in Spencer Supports (“in Martinsville 27 and 28, for appointments. Dial 5103, Mrs. R. Hill, 23 Ellsworth St.”).

50 years ago – 1975

Bassett police officers J.L. Carter and B.A. Smith recovered a safe that had nearly $50,000 worth of bonds, certificates of deposit, silver dollars and several guns. Most of those items were gone from the safe when it was found. The safe had been stolen in a burglary of the home of H.D. Eanes of Blackberry Road.

25 years ago - 2000

Thirty-three houses were being worked on as part of the City’s Southside Revitalization Project. That included the area of Union, Oak, Knowle, Summit and Askin streets. It was funded by the Community Block Grant program.
