100 Years ago – 1925
Fulcher’s Man Shop, in the Brown Lee Building, offered “Two-Trousers Suits – Right when you need such clothes the most, the Suit with the extra pair of trousers is most welcome.”
75 years ago – 1950
State Highway 687, 6 miles between Ridgeway and Horsepasture, was being paved. A final coat of fine stone and tar was applied to the section from near Chestnut Knob to western Horsepasture where the road meets Route 58. The section of road between Chestnut Knob and Ridgeway was being regraded and the bride across Marrowbone Creek rebuilt.
50 years ago – 1975
Agent James B. Holley of 507 Mason Court, Martinsville, was named “Man of the Month” by Peoples Life Insurance Company, where he was an insurance salesman.
25 years ago - 2000
Matt Ashburn, a 2000 graduate of Martinsville High School, was ahead of the curve when it came to learning the internet and computers. He had experience in programing, web development, technical support and video production support. He helped set up the “e-town meeting” (a city council-related meeting broadcast online) on April 29. Ashburn also had set up his own websites: geekswap.com, an auction site, and another that tracked and recorded computer-generated errors related to Y2K.
