100 Years ago – 1925
Ad for Piedmont Trust Bank: “Bountiful Harvest – What a joy, what a blessing is harvest time to the average farmer, when crops are bountiful and prices high enough to realize a tidy sum for the season’s work! It is after such a successful harvest that the farmer takes his surplus, stores it for future use and protects himself against any threatened famine of the future. And so should it be for the layman who, when he or she is earning plentifully, places aside what is not needed for current expenses and puts it in a Savings Account …”
75 years ago – 1950
E.R. Highfield Insurance Agency at 6 W. Church St., across from the post office, offered Continental’s original Polio Policy. It would pay up to $5,000 in medical expenses for any family with a member stricken by polio. Two years of protection for a family cost $10 (worth $109 today).
50 years ago – 1975
Oak Level Baptist Church, off Route 220 in Oak Level, held its building dedication. Dr. G.B. Hill delivered the sermon. The church was constituted in 1937 and built in 1939. Dr. J.P. McCabe, W.J. Yeaman and R.L. Haynes were credited with helping get the church built.
Clover Brand Dairy of Martinsville advertised its milk, in a bottle or paper carton, claiming that milk give “energy plus,” builds new tissues and tones and mends bodies. Its phone number was 4587.
25 years ago - 2000
Harrison Toms was the new chairman of the local chapter of the American Red Cross, replacing Sam Owens. Cindi Showalter was the first vice chairman, Beth Sibbick second vice chairman and Sarah V. Wells, secretary. New directors were Mervin Brown, Sherri Haley, Lori Hurt, Barbara Jackman and Karen Warlitner. Ruth Dickerson, Harry Rhett and Suzanne Steele rotated off the board.
