100 Years ago – 1925
The Blue Ridge Baptist Association held its annual meeting at First Baptist Church, the first time in 20 years that the association had met in Martinsville. About 500 representatives of the association’s member churches attended. All the visitors who stayed the night in Martinsville were entertained in the homes of the members of the Martinsville church. Next year, the association would meet in the Blackberry church in Henry County.
75 years ago – 1950
Frank Thompson, 16, of north Martinsville, was killed instantly when the dump truck he was riding in overturned on Stultz Road.
The Southside Fire Station’s second annual Better Fishing Rodo was held at Judge Kennon C. Whittle’s lake south of the city. The contest was open to children and teenagers younger than 16 years old.
50 years ago – 1975
Morgan Motors Inc. on U.S. 220 North sold the Volkswagen Rabbit, which had gas mileage of 38 miles to the gallon.
25 years ago – 2000
The Patriot Centre at Beaver Creek branch of the Collinsville Fire Department received a $560,000 fire truck with a 75-foot ladder. From the ladder a directional nozzle could put out 1,000 gallons per minute in a mist or jet stream.
Sara Lee Activeware signed an agreement of interest to buy the Tultex Customer Service Center at Beaver Creek. Tultex also was expected to sign a contract for the sale of its complex on the corner of Franklin Street and Commonwealth Boulevard by the end of the week.
