100 Years ago – 1925
The County Treasurer’s staff set dates, between Nov. 2 and 30, to collect taxes in the following communities: Irisburg, Lone Oak, Axton, Mountain Valley, Leatherwood, Figsboro, Philpott, Bassett, Sanville at P.G. Wright’s Store, King J. Via, Smith Store, Spencer, Horsepasture, Ridgeway, Fieldale and Martinsville.
75 years ago – 1950
Three-year-old Jesse Carter of City Route 3 was diagnosed with polio and was being treated in a hospital in Richmond. His was the eighth case of polio in the area, none classified as serious. Jimmy Beckner Jr., 4, and Marie Grant, 4, remained hospitalized.
25 years ago - 2000
Whether or not Al Gore or George Bush became the 43rd president was up to Florida election officials who were still working their way for results. Locally, Don Lawson was the president of the Henry County Republican Committee, and he advocated for officials taking their time to get the results right. Phil Burnette, the president of the Henry County Democratic Party, said the same.
