100 Years ago – 1925
An American Legion post was organized in Stuart. Fifth District Committeeman Chas. E. Reed of Martinsville and eight members of Pannill Post of Martinsville directed. Thirteen men signed on as charter members. It was named the George Divers Post.
75 years ago – 1950
Mayor J.R. Walker proclaimed Civic Music Week in Martinsville. He urged local residents to support and join the Civic Music Association, which was starting its short membership drive. People who joined the Association would have admission to a series of concerts for the season. The president of the Music Association was Frank Brown; secretary, Mrs. Robert Haskell; treasurer, Woodrow Carter; and co-chairmen, Miss Mabel Holt and Robert Gravely.
50 years ago – 1975
Inflation remained a serious problem, with wholesale prices up 1.8% in October 1975, the government reported.
Kmart advertised 5 by 7 color portraits at 38 cents ($2.28 in today’s money) each, with your choice of backgrounds.
25 years ago - 2000
Henry County deputies got signatures from people across the county to haul away about five dozen junked vehicles. It was a few years into a program by Horsepasture Supervisor Debra Parsons Buchanan by which car owners would receive $50 for each junk vehicle hauled away.
