The City’s Recreation Department held a Hallowe’en party at Courthouse Square. A parade of costumes began at 8 p.m. Children were given free apples at both city fire stations. Free apples also were given out at a party at Albert Harris School. Michael Handy, 5, and Karen Palmer, 5, won prizes for the cutest costumes in the parade at the Square. Michael was dressed as a Red Devil, and his prize was a Roy Rogers pistol and belt. Karen wore a witch costume, and her prize was a doll.
Ernest Cox, 19, of Pleasant Grove, while he was crossing a Pleasant Grove property with others celebrating Hallowe’en, was shot in the left arm, hand and thigh. The 64-year-old property owner was arrested on a charge of malicious wounding. In the City, the only Hallowe’en trouble was the soaping of windows and automobile, and a teenager from Bassett was arrested for setting off fireworks.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Department solved the case – mostly – of a rooster, two chickens and a ringnecked pheasant that had been taken from the chicken pen of Marvin Rigney of Route 1, Axton. Deputies found three of the missing birds at a neighbor’s house. The pheasant could not be located, and it was speculated that it had found its way into the soup pot. Mr. Rigney said birds have disappeared before from the closed cage, so this time he swore out two warrants, charging petty larceny and trespassing.
