100 Years ago – 1925
The Jackson-Medwin Better-Value Store opened in Martinsville. Advertised for the grand opening were candies, from 20 to 40 cents per pound; boys’ corduroy and tweed pants at 98 cents; and imported dressing combs at 79 cents. For the ladies were rayon silk chemises, rayon silk stepins, Satinette stepins, ladies’ flannel nightgowns, ladies’ Satinette bloomers and ladies’ Satinette princess slips, at 69 cents each. The store was at T.E. Gravely & Company’s old stand in Public Square.
75 years ago – 1950
ATU and ABC agents seized an 800-gallon-capacity still and destroyed 4,000 gallons of mash during a raid in a location about a mile north of Philpott Station.
