50 years ago – 1975
First National Bank of Bassett, which also had offices in Ridgeway and Collinsville, was open with full banking operations every Saturday until noon.
25 years ago - 2000
Amy Elizabeth Shupe, 16, of Martinsville, died in a car wreck. The Laurel Park High School student was driving westbound on U.S. 58 near Mount Olivet Road when her car went into the median strip and flipped at least twice into the eastbound lanes.
Martinsville City Councilman Bruce H.T. Dallas announced that he was resigning his posts in the Democratic Party and would become an independent. He said he had been a Democrat for 40 years. Dallas supported U.S. Rep. Virgil Goode, an independent, and was helping post signs for Goode. A photograph of Dallas removing signs for Republicans had been published in the local newspaper.
