100 Years ago – 1926
J.H. Stanley sold his Wigwam Billiard Parlor and its equipment to Mr. J. Norman, formerly of South Boston, who renamed it the Palace Billiard Parlor.
75 years ago – 1951
Work began again at Philpott Dam with the pouring of concrete. It had stalled because a fire destroyed an electrical control board which regulated mechanical equipment.
50 years ago – 1976
Nearly 1,700 signatures were on petitions calling for an investigation of Lawrence Martin, the fired county accountant who 3 months later was hired as Henry County administrator, but since Martin had just resigned, Henry County Circuit Court Judge John D. Hooker agreed with four members of the petition drive that an investigation would no longer serve any purpose.
25 years ago - 2001
Martinsville High School was one of nine high schools in Virginia to test out having students take the Standards of Learning tests online. It was part of an effort to have all Virginia high school students take the tests online by 2003.
Marlboro cigarettes cost $20.99 per carton at Figsboro Mart. Winstons, Salems and Camels cost $19.99 per carton. Sunbeam bread cost $1.19 a loaf, and a gallon of milk cost $2.39.
