100 Years ago – 1925

The annual Thanksgiving service sponsored by the churches of the city was held at Anderson Memorial Presbyterian Church. It started at 10:30 a.m., earlier than usual, to give people time to get home promptly at noon. The speaker was Dr. Dunkley of the church.

Jim Bob Bondurant Jr. of Martinsville was injured in a car accident in Roanoke. He was out of work for several days recuperating. He was the son of the man the local KKK chapter was named for.

50 years ago – 1975

Martinsville City Council moved to make downtown parking easier by deciding to issue warnings for on-street parking violations before writing tickets. Downtown Business Association Chairman Bill Wade had asked Council to lesson penalties for parking, because parking tickets were discouraging people from going shopping downtown. Meanwhile, two women police assistants, Joy Brugh and Debra Spencer, had just begun working to enforce parking regulations. Hiring them freed up patrolmen for regular policing duties.

25 years ago - 2000

The Collinsville Furniture Mart sold black metal bunkbeds, with room for three, for $129.

At Lester Home Center, Glidden wall paint cost between $14.99 and $20.99 per gallon. A gallon of Kilz sealer-primer-stain blocker cost between $12.99 and $14.99.
