100 Years ago – 1925

75 years ago – 1950
A constitution was drafted for a new organization, “Christmas Cheer,” which would coordinate the distribution of food, clothes, toys and other items among the needy during the holiday season. The committee drafting the constitution was made up of City Manager Kent Mathewson, Martinsville Bulletin publisher Robert H. Haskell, Dan A. Green of Globman’s, Mrs. Ina McKee, R.M. Wilson and Claude E. Taylor Jr. Representatives of 25 civic organizations attended the organization meeting in City Hall.
Nationwide phone service was nearly back to normal after a strike had started, but that was because there were fewer phone calls on a Saturday than a regular work day, and since it was Armistice Day, in some areas pickets were withdrawn so workers could go in to work and draw extra holiday pay. However, the strike was not over, and union officials promised that it would heat up in the following week.
25 years ago - 2000
Larry and Alley inc. held an Uptown Christmas Extravaganza “with a wonderland of furniture, decorations, festive table settings and flower arrangements. Santa Claus was there, and apples and sweets were served. Prizes were given: first, $800 value bedding; second, $500 cash; third, a Bosch dishwasher; fourth, a Henry Link wicker cocktail table; and fifth, a pair of pillows.
