100 Years ago – 1925

Piedmont Trust Bank ad: “STOP!” [below the word “Stop,” a drawing of a man in a car hauling a huge bag with the word “Income” on it] “Don’t Spend It. No! Don’t spend it all or spend any of it thoughtlessly. You work hard for your income and it is only fair that part of it should work just as hard for you. If you will put a regular part of your money in a Savings account here it will work for you.”

75 years ago – 1950

At the final night of the Henry County Industrial Exposition, a bedroom suite including a bed, double dresser, chest of drawers, nightstands, vanity and vanity bench were auctioned off. After the factory cost of the suite was deducted, the rest was donated to the underprivileged children’s fund. There was a quiz contest with prizes of 100 silver dollars. The Army and Air Force recruiting service showed the film “Operation Crossroads,” the official defense department film on the Bikini atomic bomb explosion. One thousand nine hundred people attended, bringing total attendance over five days to more than 9,000.

50 years ago – 1975

The Virginia Highway Safety Division awarded a $30,000 grant to make a driver education range at Fieldale-Collinsville High School.

25 years ago - 2000

As part of ways law enforcement was trying to control criminal activities at Rivermont Apartments, people on probation were barred from going there without permission. The ban was the idea of 21st Circuit Department of Probation Director Karl Hellriegel. Probation officers were driving through the Rivermont parking lots seeing if their probationers were hanging around there. Apartment complex manager Bessie Kent told the Martinsville Bulletin that it was a good idea but probably not feasible to enforce.
