100 Years ago – 1925

 R.L. Haynes and C.D. Willis, partner-owners of Koehler Motor Co., dissolved their partnership. Mr. Haynes would continue that business on his own, while Mr. Willis left to be in charge of the repair shop of Holland Motor Co. in Martinsville.

75 years ago – 1950

Workers at Fieldcrest Hosiery Mill in Fieldale took a vote on unionizing, but the results were not clear and would have to be reviewed by the National Labor Relations Board. One hundred four employees voted in favor of representation by the American Federation of Hosiery Workers; 103 voted against it; three votes were voided; and three were challenged.

Ann Steele, 8, was diagnosed with having polio and sent to a polio ward in Roanoke.

50 years ago – 1975

Mrs. Lawrence Kowal of Apache Trail had been growing gourds and squashes for many years. When she was clearing out the remnants of the summer’s garden, among the weeds she came across some kind of a gourd, which she did not recognize, that was 3 feet long and about 6 inches in diameter. She figured it had come about through cross-pollination. Paul Compton of Ridgeway said that it was a German squash. He had grown one several years ago and grew one that was 42 inches long, but they were good to eat when small.

25 years ago - 2000

Patrick Henry Community College announced that it would offer an associate degree problem for teacher’s aides, starting in the spring semester.
