In recent years, antifreeze had gone up in price and at times been scarce – because the ingredients used to make it had been in high demand by another product they made, permanent press clothing. In 1975 the recession caused consumers to buy less clothing. During the height of permanent press clothing the year before, antifreeze cost between $5 and $8 a gallon. Now it sold between $4 and $6 per gallon, depending on the price, at JCPenney in the Patrick Henry Mall, and $5 at Buddy Arrington Union 76 Service Center in Villa Heights, $2 cheaper than the year before.
