100 Years ago – 1925
Investors from Roanoke funded a new bus line which would run between Martinsville and Roanoke as soon as the new road is completed near Boone’s Mill. The investors bought several new buses, each with seating capacity of 30. Several trips would be made each day between the two points.
75 years ago – 1950
Mount Vernon Baptist Church between Mountain Valley and Axton voted to construct a large new building. Members of the building committee were Oswald W. Hairfield Jr. T.S. Law Jr. and Willard Minter. The year before, G.F. Hankins gave the congregation $5,000 ($67,000 in today’s money) as a start toward building a new church. Mr. Hankins was the grandson of the founder and first pastor of the church.
50 years ago – 1975
About 20 Martinsville citizens appealed to City Council to enact a leash law for the city. People had been complaining recently, as evidenced by letters to the editor, about hassles and problems of dogs running loose and in their yards. City Council agreed to put the matter to a citywide advisory referendum.
