100 Years ago – 1925

 The latest fad was to use small bisque doll heads on the top of parasols, in place of the ferrule, or a strap of ribbon at the back of the doll’s nec to serve as a handle to carry to parasol on the wrist.

75 years ago – 1950

Martinsville attorney W.R. Broaddus was elected president of the Virginia State Bar Association.

50 years ago – 1975

Centel Telephone Company of Virginia asked the State Corporation Commission for a $3.4 million rate increase. It would mean an increase of $1.25 per month for Martinsville residents with private lines, to bring the monthly bill to $11.10. Customers in smaller areas and those with party lines also would have increases. On Aug. 12, Centel did approve an increase of 4.83% on the base bill for all customers.

25 years ago - 2000

Memorial Hospital of MHC had a new linear accelerator to treat cancer patients, in the Ravenel Oncology Center. Patients used to have to go to Duke University Medical Center for those treatments which the new piece of equipment could handle.

Social security checks for people in the zip codes 24113, 24114 and 24115 (zip codes of Martinsville post office boxes) had not arrived and were presumed lost in the mail.
