100 Years ago – 1925

There was dispute over the Tobacco Growers Cooperative Association. An advertisement in the Henry Bulletin stated, “Number 3 – Expenses. Opponents of co-operative marketing have claimed extravagance on the part of the management of the Tobacco Association …”

75 years ago – 1950

A replica of the original Liberty Bell rang in programs held in Fieldale, Bassett and Martinsville to promote the Savings Bond drive. The bell traveled by truck from location to location. The program in Martinsville was held at the courthouse, with an opening program by the Martinsville High School Band, and speeches by Rep. Thomas B. Stanley, Mayor Nick Prillaman and Del. W.R. Broaddus.

50 years ago – 1975

The keynote speaker at the 28th annual Memorial Day service at Roselawn Burial Park was Attorney General Andrew P. Miller, sponsored by Pannill Post No. 42 and Bassett Post No. 11 of the American Legion. About 150 people attended the service.

25 years ago - 2000

Calvary Christian Church on Mulberry Road was getting a new roof and a steeple. Stanley W Bowles Corp. was the contractor doing the work.
