100 Years ago – 1925

The third annual short course for Henry County 4-H club girls were announced. Miss Steel, a Playground Director from Bristol, Va., would be in charge. Local Home Health Nurse Miss Drewry, who taught last year’s course, would teach “First Aid” and “Clothes and Health” this year. Poultry Specialist Miss Bessie Hodsden of Blacksburg would teach about poultry, and Miss Sally Guy Davis of Roanoke would teah about table service, table etiquette and bread-making. The course would be held through July 4.

75 years ago – 1950

Ad: “Smith’s Upholstery – Re-Cover Now. Save Money – Fix up Old Furniture. Blackie Smith, owner. Call SMITH’S today. Dial 4617. Located at Chatham Hts. In Old Bob’s Soda Shop Location.”

50 years ago – 1975

Sabra Geter, 36, and Curtis Adams, 43, bought the Pine Hall Grocery at 1113 Pine Hall Road. The store had been owned by Geter’s father, William H. Geter and operated for 14 years. Both of the new owners had been longtime employees of the Martinsville Bulletin. Adams and his wife, Mary, had five children and one grandchild and lived in Rich Acres; Geter and his wife, Linda, had a young son and lived at 1101 Ridge Road.

25 years ago - 2000

Martinsville had the highest unemployment rate in Virginia, at 16.3%, and Henry County ranked fourth, at 8.6%.

The ribbon-cutting was held for the new Carilion Health System clinic on Brookdale Street. Tammy Hagar was the Carilion regional practice manager and Peny Turner was the site manager. Doctors were Matthew Arroyo, Merris Stambaugh, W.D. Prince, Will Zimmer, Sinclair Harcus and W. Benton Lewis.
