100 Years ago – 1925
All physical fit men aged 17-24 who could read and write were encouraged to join the Citizens Military Training Camp for 1925. Henry County’s quota for the camp was six men. Men up to age 31 would be accepted as well, in a different class, if they were high school graduates with military experience. The all-expense-paid camps would be held July 1-31.
75 years ago – 1950
The Rev. Chevis Horne, pastor of First Baptist Church, was the speaker for the annual homecoming service at High Street Baptist Church, were the Rev. Hezekiah Morris was the pastor. Horne and Morris have been credited with leading the efforts to integrate Martinsville in a peaceful way. Horne, who was white, and Morris, who was black, worked together for many years for racial harmony.
50 years ago – 1975
For the first time ever, City utility bills were on computerized tickets. It was necessary from then on to include that card when paying the bill.
25 years ago - 2000
Seventeen Albert Harris Intermediate School students were injured slightly when a station wagon pulled in front of the bus, which was driven by Robert Lamont Brown, near the Corner Market in Brosville. The students had been on their was back from a field trip to the Danville Science Center. Four of the injured students were taken to Memorial Hospital by the Axton Life Saving Crew, and 14 others were taking to Danville Regional Medical Center by other rescue squads.
