Richard P. Gravely was the speaker at a meeting of the Shannon Hills Extension Homemakers Club, which was held at the home of Mrs. Floy Byrum on Shannon Court. Gravely was the chair of the Martinsville-Henry County Bicentennial Commission. One of the Commission’s projects was a picture book of local history, sponsored by the Martinsville-Henry County Woman’s Club. The Woman’s Club had collected thousands of pictures for the book and was narrowing them down to those to publish. Other projects being planned included articles in the newspaper; a local cookbook; and a biography of Gen. Joseph Martin.

Ten candidates were vying for the one vacant Collinsville Supervisor seat, left empty after the death of Jack Dalton: Stuart Bowman, Andy Parker, Nora Jenkins, Dr. Calvin Rains, Cindy Summit, Tony L. Millner Jr., Wilhelmina Foster, Richard Ephgrave, John Scott and George Lyle. However, it was discovered that Parker lived just past the district’s dividing line, so he ended up ineligible to run. Rains ended up being chosen to take the role. He was sworn in on June 28.
