100 Years ago – 1925

75 years ago – 1950
Mitchell Motors (Clyde Mitchell, president) donated a panel truck to the Martinsville Volunteer Fire Company (Horace Dyer, president, and Jim Minter, fire chief). The truck would be used to haul boots, overcoats and equipment to fires.
50 years ago – 1975
The cartoon giraffe that was Martinsville’s new mascot was given a name: “High Pockets.” The logo features a giraffe’s neck and head rising up through the bubble letters “MHC”, with “Things are looking up” in cursive below. The MHC Chamber of Commerce used the “Things are looking up in Martinsville and Henry County” promotion, and it sponsored a giraffe-naming contest. The winning name was chosen by Mrs. Jody Lewis of Warsaw, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Amon Brodie of 803 Hunting Ridge Road. About 1,500 people submitted entries at 10 entry locations.
25 years ago - 2000
Virginia Hall Stanley died. She was the first woman to serves as the chairman of the Martinsville Democratic Party, a role she held for 25 years. She was the first woman president of the Retail Merchants Association. She was an active member of the Martinsville Planning Commission; she worked in the display advertising department of the Martinsville Bulletin for 26 years; and she wrote the column “Around Town with Virginia. She also worked with the Salvation Army, the Cancer Crusade, the business women’s association, the local hospital auxiliary and the Cerebral Palsy fund drive. She organized the Martinsville Christmas Parade for several years. She also served on boards outside the community. She was a graduate of the John Powers School of Modeling, and she had taught modeling.
