100 Years ago – 1925

Globman’s Department Store, advertising itself as “The Store That’s Always Busy,” held a store remodeling sale, which would close on May 2. Merchandise included Men’s Nainsook Union Suits, slightly soiled, 44 cents; 75-cent trade Men’s Union Suits at 59 cents; Men’s Birdhead Overalls, 220 denim, best $2 grade, at $1.48.

Thirty members of the Mystic Shrine from Stuart, Fieldale, Roanoke and Martinsville met at the New Hamilton Hotel Saturday night for more than 2 hours. The meeting was a set-up meeting on the campaign which the Kazim Temple in Roanoke was about to launch, to raise $4,000 for a new mosque.

75 years ago – 1950

A County bus driver was fined $40 ($527 in today’s money) on a reckless driving charge, convicted in County Trial Justice Court. He also received a 10-day jail sentence on condition that he not drive a school bus for the next year. Trooper C.T. Darnell testified that on April 24 the man had driven a school bus in a reckless manner on Highway 108 (Figsboro Road). There was a distinct odor of alcohol on his breath, but he was not drunk, the trooper said.

Gov. John S. Battle led a dedication service for the new, $500,000 Patrick Henry Elementary School.

50 years ago – 1975

Druid Hills Baptist Church with its pastor, the Rev. C.E. Blankenship, was trying to get ready to open a new school, called Martinsville Christian School. It chose the school’s name on May 10 and was in the process of putting together a board of directors with people from across the community.

25 years ago – 2000

Winners of the City Council election were vice mayor Gene Teague and incumbent Councilman Bruce Dallas. Planning Commission Chairman Ron Ferrill won the seat vacated by Elizabeth Haskell, who did not seek reelection.
