News from Lexington, Ky.: “Man Indicted on Evolution Charge – Believes Man Ascended From Lower Order, But Not Descended from Monkey – John T. Scopes, of Paducah, Ky., who is under indictment by a grand jury at Dayton, Tenn., on charges of violating the state’s anti-evolution law, believes that ‘man and all animals ascended from the lower order, but I have never seen or read any scientific statement that man descended from a monkey and I do not believe that. Mr. Scopes made his statement here today while visiting the University of Kentucky, from which he was graduated last June. The 24-year-old teacher in the Dayton school appears to be somewhat embarrassed by the publicity which the Tennessee test case, instituted by his friends has brought him. He is looking forward, however, to the trial at a special term of the Rhea county circuit court set for July 10, which he believes, affects not so much himself as the educational progress of the state. …”

Here was a funny (to us now) letter to the Ann Landers advice column. Imagine if this letter-writer could see now how the Styrofoam “to-go” plate is just an assumed part of the restaurant experience?” “Last night I had a dinner date with an attractive young man who is a successful attorney. He took me to a fashionable (and expensive) restaurant. As the waiter was about to clear the table, my friend asked him to please put the remainder of his steak in a bag so he could take it home to his dog. I happen to know the gentleman doesn’t have a dog.

“I confess I was embarrassed when he made the request. It seemed a little cheap. Upon leaving the restaurant we ran into friends. I felt very self-conscious, wondering whether or not they noticed my escort was carrying a paper sack. Please give me your view on this.”
