100 Years ago – 1925
The Patrick Springs Hotel, a summer resort, was put on the market, following the death of its proprietor earlier in the month.
Appalachian Power Company bought the Rocky Mount Light and Power Company for $50,000. A new machine would be installed at once to give more a powerful lighting system. By 2 years, the Rocky Mount system would be upgraded, and connected to the power systems of the larger cities.
75 years ago – 1950
Mrs. Blanch Terry was fined $50 in County Trial Justice Court on charges of cursing a neighbor. The man, Joe Scales of Penn’s Store community, was accused of stealing hay from her husband but the charge was dropped.
The Patrick County Boy Scout Rally was held in the Stuart High School gym. Troops from Meadows of Dan, Ararat, Claudville, Patrick Springs, Nettle Ridge, Russell Creek and Stuart took part.
50 years ago – 1975
Tourists could ride the Dan River Queen at the cost of $1 for adults and 50 cents for children, paying Mrs. Margaret Burge behind the counter of the Luck Spot (General Merchandise), on Highway 58 in Patrick County. The fancy double-decker riverboat had been built 8 years before. High school senior Ernie Harris paddled the boat around in a circular path on a man-made lake fed by five natural springs, each trip about lasting about 30 minutes. It was his third year as ship captain.
25 years ago - 2000
The first TGIF 2000 concert of the season was held in the Bridge Street parking lot. Sponsors were Martinsville KIA, Lawrence Distributing Co. of Coors/Coors Light and Coke. TGIF bands of 2000 were Station Wagon, Domino, The Rogues, FATZ, Key West and Cimmaron.
The ribbon-cutting for Piedmont Community Service’s new office building on Clay Street was held. Jim Tobin was the PCS director.
